Frugal Tip: Meal Planning
By · Jan 16Sometimes I can be kind of stubborn. And by kind of stubborn I mean really stubborn (just ask my mom or my husband!). Sometimes even if I know there are things that would make my life better and easier, I am just reluctant to do them. It is my own little rebellion…against who I am not sure. And sometimes I am just cutting off my nose to spite my face as they say.
This is the case with meal planning. For years I have known that this would help streamline my life, simplify my days and help me to better use the groceries I was buying. But I just couldn’t do it. There was something about it that made me feel like I was giving up my freedom. I know this makes sense only in my crazy brain, but it was how I felt.
So, one of my New Year’s Resolutions was to start menu planning. And guess what? It is fabulous. I sit down each Sunday night, take a look at what is in the refrigerator and what we have laying around the house, and I write up a menu for the next week. I have learned that I need to include at least one night for left overs, so that we aren’t wasting anything.
Not only is this saving us money because I am using the stuff we already have (like the half used container of won ton skins that had been in the refrigerator for a LONG time) but it is saving us money because we are not tempted to order a pizza because I don’t know what is for dinner. It has even helped me have more peaceful and calm afternoons, because I am not trying to come up with something for dinner in the midst of homework, piano practicing, crazy cranky baby time.
This is working out wonderfully for me. I haven’t lost my freedom I have gained it. I think part of me was worried that on any particular day we would be assigned to tacos and I wouldn’t “feel” like tacos, but that really hasn’t been a problem. And I imagine that I can be a little flexible if I need to be.
Do you do meal planning? If so, how long of a plan do you do and how is it working for you? If so, I would love to hear all about it in the comments.

I do meal planning, and I usually do it for the whole month, BuT, why I like it, is..I get all the grocerys for month, (exclude parishables…) and then if I dont feel eating what I assigned to that certain day, I just look through the rest of the month, and pick one that sounds good, and cross it off…So that I know I have made that certain meal…So it gives me the consitency of having it all planned, but gives me the freedom to choose…

I haven’t been very good at meal planning – I can really identify with the rebellion instinct. I fear over structuring my life so much because I dont like feeling trapped in plans. I dont know where that comes from really..?
I think your list of payoffs and the fact that I am having baby #3 this year has motivated me to plan meals better. I just dont have an appetite for most of my pregnancy so I think that will help me as well if I just know what to make and go for it.
My husband and I have been following your blog and deals the past few months and I have to say he is way into it and it’s hilarious! He has all the coupons and all the walgreens ads (we’re going to start with rite aid) and it has become a gratifying hobby for him. He’s always been a deal finder, so it works for us!
Thanks for all your work you put into this!

I do the same thing and it has saved me time and $. I don’t assign every day a specific meal, though. I just plan for around 5 meals for the week (one or two days of leftovers, date night, or on a day that I just don’t feel like cooking, we do grilled cheese or frozen pizza which I always have on hand)and then I cook on whatever night what I feel like for that night out of my 5 menu options. i like options!

I menu plan. I plan a month at a time. I do write it in pencil so that if I need to swap something I am able to do that. I also assign every day of the week a category: Monday=Mexican, Tuesday=pasta, etc. I am saving so much money by doing this. I understand that menu planning doesn’t work for everyone, but it is awesome for me and my OCD.

Okay, I hate grocery shopping at Walmart, but I thought that was the cheapest so I would always go there. I would meal plan for two weeks and then just suck it up and go. I have an 8 month old and between her and the groceries, my cart would get hard to push. I hated it. And then it seemed that I had so much food in the fridge that some of it would go to waste. I always forgot about the produce I had and it ended up spoiling. So this year I decided to start going once per week. I sit down on Monday and plan lunches and dinners for the whole week for my husband and for me (we’re cold cereal breakfast people). And now that I’ve jumped on the frugal bandwagon, I’m going to start shopping less at Walmart and shopping more sales at other grocery stores. So far, we’ve been eating a lot more healthy. Planning 4 meals per week (we eat leftovers every other night) is a lot easier than planning 8 or 9 meals for two weeks. Also, I know what’s in the fridge and I make sure that we eat all of the fruits and vegetables. It’s manageable and I love it.

I do my meal planning once a week. I shop on Saturdays, so my weeks go Saturday – Friday. I plan one extra meal so that on Friday we still have two choices. Whatever we don’t eat on Friday gets put into the rotation for the next week. Once we are done with grad school, I will probably throw in a date night/take out night once a week.

I learned meal planning from my mom and have continued doing it. She would plan 2 weeks in advance (I usually only do 1) and on one side of the paper would write all the meals and on the other she would make the grocery list. She would then hang the list on the fridge for the week so we never had to ask what was for dinner, we could just look ourselves. This works for husbands as well. I really like this because it leaves the guess work out of the week when unexpected things come up, and you know you have all the ingredients for the meals even if you have to change the days up a bit. I have learned that I have to be realistic and put one day for going out, usually at the end of the week, kind of like a reward to sticking with the program. Every mom deserves a day off from cooking and dishes and this really works to motivate me.
I do get really tired of eating leftovers everyday for lunch though, but if I don’t they go bad too quickly. It if just so much easier to stop and get something quick, but this really adds up. Any suggestions on fun, easy lunches for adults?

I used to plan a 2 week menu and I loved it! No more nights of wondering "What's for dinner" and ending up ordering pizza or having pancakes! However, as my hubby has been on and off diets a lot lately, it has been frustrating and I got out of that wonderful habit of meal planning. I hated cooking a "nice" dinner for 3 kids who would whine they didn't like it, whatever, and were happy as could be with pancakes, ramen, or mac & cheese. Now hubby is on a health food type diet (= expensive) that is all planned out for us, so I make extras of his meals once or twice a week that everyone can eat (or at least try) and then do something more simple for the kiddos. And me being prego, I am just kinda picky and end up munching a lot!

The way I do meal planning is to quickly look in the fridge and pantry then head to a store. I buy the good deals until I have about enough for a week of dinners. I have tried making my menu at home, but it’s more expensive that way. Taking a minute as I enter the store to check out the deals saves me a lot of time and money. Oh, and I never shop WalMart, too many “interesting” shoppers for my kids to look at.

I meal plan and write up the list and put it on the fridge–I try to have the meals that are using up existing items earlier in the week but we are also pretty flexible to say “we would rather have this instead tonight” (which hubby does) unless its a crockpot meal that has been cooking all day!

I meal plan… I do two weeks at a time, but if I plan for every night of that two weeks, that will usually work for the whole month because we have so much left over every night. And I don’t just stick to it every day, if I am planning tortilla soup and I want chicken and biscuits, I go ahead and do chicken and biscuits. I’m not strict about it, but having everything written out makes me feel a little more organized.

I meal plan 1 week in advance. I go by what is in our freezer and our stock pile. This has saved us a lot of money and my sanity. If something doesn’t sound good we swap nights or we just have chicken noodle soup or frozen pizzas. I always have both on hand in case we are running late for something or getting home late from an event.

I love your blog and am excited to impliment your ideas. I have a master menu I sit down with once a month. I write down ingredients I don’t have on hand and that becomes my shopping list. I shop once a month for everything and hit a produce place for fresh fruits and veggies in the middle of the month. That’s it. I don’t plug a meal per day, I just know I can make anything on the list as long as I’ve stocked my pantry well. I love only doing major grocery shopping once a month.

I have been menu planning one week at a time for years. If I don’t, I stand around in the kitchen for an hour, looking very lost, wondering what to make for dinner! I keep a dry erase board on the fridge with the meals beside each day. I am a planner and my husband is the wild card, so sometimes he wants to switch things up. I am not hard-core that what we plan for Monday absolutely has to be served on Monday, so it works for us. The only thing that never changes is “Taco Tuesday.” My son loves tacos, and he thinks that he MUST east tacos on Tuesday or the world will fall apart.
It makes menu planning a little easier if I already know one day!

I have been menu planning for a couple of years now. I have 5 little kids so just picking up and heading to the store doesn’t work well for me! I do two weeks at a time but as someone else said, this usually can spread another week with leftovers. I don’t assign them to a certain day either- I just look at the list, pick what sounds good and then it gets crossed off after that. The only problem I come across is when there is a perishable food I need and I don’t remember to get it. I try to decide the day before what I will make the next night. This way my husband can pick up anything else I might need from the store on the way home the night before. I save a lot of time and money. I am notorious for having my husband stop and get something for dinner on the way home if I DON’T have a plan!

I usually plan 7 to 10 meals that I have all the stuff for. I then put the list on the fridge and the kids take turns picking what we are having for dinner the next night. What we don’t eat that week is rolled onto the next week. My problem is. . .I get burned out of their favorite meals that they think we should have every week.

Ah yes, meal planning. Thanks for the motivation! Jared seems to be happy with whatever I throw on the table so sometimes I don’t put too much effort into it. I’m off and on with being prepared for meals, and I always feel better when I am!

I also plan for about 2 weeks and then can be flexible based on time, energy and what I want to eat. However, I think I spend MORE when I meal plan because I buy everything I need for a nice meal and if I didn’t we would probably just eat frozen burritos or something (I only have 1 baby). So how does it help you save money?

I do meal planning once a week for that week. I like it that way for two reasons:
1. we get paid weekly
2. i plan off the weekly adds for fresh produce for our meals for the week.
I even got a little chalkboard and hang it in the kitchen and each week I write the meals we are going to have. Its a cute decoration and totally helps me. Plus my family likes knowing whats coming.
I also try to plan at least 1 crockpot meal for a busy day and one meal that is new or complicated so that I can try new recipes but dont have to feel that cooking is overwhelming each day.

This month I started meal planning for the whole month! It took a bit longer but it has been worth it. I kept feeling like I was making the same thing over and over and now I can see what we are eating for the month and I avoid repeats. Thank you for your blog, it is a HUGE help!

I recently started meal planning, and though it does take time and work, it makes the evenings so much easier. I post the menus each Monday on my blog with links to recipes, then I can just check each day to see what’s for dinner! I’ve been getting the lists together a week ahead, so I’m ready on Sunday or Monday to get the grocery shopping done for the week. We’ve eaten out a lot less and we’ve utilized our leftovers better too!

I plan 5 meals around what’s on sale but I don’t assign them for specific nights. And we always have stuff on hand for real quick such as grilled cheese or soup.
